Over the past few years, we have witnessed the progress of construction of the magnificent glass and steel tower rising on Meadows Road in Boca Raton. It is anticipated that the new Gloria Drummond Patient Tower at Boca Raton Regional Hospital will start seeing patients this Fall. You might ask “Who was Gloria Drummond”? She is considered to be the founder of Boca Raton Community Hospital. That community hospital has come a long way since its opening in 1967. It was born out of tragedy. On April 21, 1962, Robert and Gloria Drummond’s two children, Debra Ann and James Randal, accidentally ingested poison. By the time they reached the nearest hospital, in Delray, some 30 minutes away, doctors were unable to save their young lives. The Drummond’s, Boca residents, vowed to never let this lack of a hospital result in the loss of other lives. They pulled together with other local residents and set out to build a hospital in Boca Raton. Thus began a saga that would culminate in what came to be known as the Boca Raton Community Hospital – “The Miracle on Meadows Road”.

Gloria’s steadfast commitment and leadership helped form the Debbie-Rand Memorial Service League, named in memory of her deceased children. This is the volunteer arm of the Hospital. Over a span of five years, a small cadre of 18 women volunteers grew to over 700. Their fundraising efforts raised hundreds of thousands of dollars through such projects as charity balls, golf tournaments, bake sales and the establishment of a thrift shop. These efforts generated the seed money for the construction of a 104-bed hospital which opened on July 17, 1967. Over the years and through the continued generosity of many community members, the Hospital was able to expand and became the existing nine floor, 394 bed hospital.
There are moments in the life of a community that mark a clear turning-point when progress becomes visible, tangible, and deeply meaningful. The grand opening of the new patient tower at the Boca Raton Regional Hospital is one of those moments. It is more than just a building filled with advanced equipment and skilled professionals; it is a symbol of growth, compassion, and a shared commitment to the well-being of every resident.
Boca Raton has grown rapidly, welcoming new families, businesses and opportunities. With that growth came an increasing need for higher-quality healthcare. The existing Hospital has served us well but could not keep up with the growing demands and challenges of the new Boca Raton. This patient tower at the Hospital will meet those new challenges. At its core, a hospital represents hope. It is where new lives begin, where healing takes place, and where people find comfort during their most vulnerable moments. This new facility has been thoughtfully designed to meet people’s needs with the latest medical and technological advances and compassion.

Equally important are the people who bring the hospital to life. Doctors, nurses, volunteers, and support staff form the heart of this institution. Their dedication, expertise, and empathy transform medical care into human care. They are not just caregivers – they are neighbors, friends, and partners in building a healthy future. Their presence strengthens the bond between healthcare and community, making the hospital a place of trust and assurance.
The opening of the new tower at the hospital highlights the power of collaboration. This achievement did not happen overnight nor was it the work of a single group. It required the vision of local leaders like Gloria Drummond and financial support from residents in both large and small amounts. It took major investments from organizations such as Baptist Health South Florida and the dedication from countless individuals who believed in the future of this project. Above all there was a strong community will to make it happen. Each step along the way demonstrated what can be accomplished when a community comes together with a shared purpose.
For patients, the hospital brings a new level of health and comfort. Every patient room will be single occupancy, at no additional cost to the patient. Parents can rest easier knowing that pediatric care is close by. In an emergency, every moment matters. The Hospital recently opened a new emergency department located in western Boca Raton on Rte. 441 near Glades Road. That facility ensures that help is not just more available but immediate.
There is also a deeper, more emotional significance to this milestone. A hospital is where life’s most profound experiences unfold – births, recoveries, and sometimes farewells. Having such a place within Boca Raton, strengthens our sense of belonging. It’s where neighbors support one another and where resilience is tested and restored.
As we celebrate this opening, it is worth reflecting on what this hospital represents for the future. It positions Boca Raton to continue growing responsibly, ensuring that the hospital keeps pace with medical advancements. It means that The Hospital will continue to attract new residents who seek not only opportunity, but also security and care. It sets a standard for what our community can achieve when we invest in what truly matters.
Of course, the work does not end here. A hospital is a living institution, one that must evolve with changing needs and advancements in health care. Continued support from the community will be essential. It will ensure that The Hospital remains strong, responsive, and effective for years to come.
Today we celebrate more than the opening of a medical building. We celebrate a commitment to health, to progress, and to one another. This hospital stands as a testament to Boca Raton’s values and our shared vision for a better future. It is a place where care meets compassion, innovation meets humanity, and every individual matters.
With its opening, the new Tower at Boca Raton Regional Hospital welcomes not just patients, but possibilities. And with that, our community steps confidently into a new era, healthier and stronger than ever before. It is truly a new “Miracle on Meadows Road”.
