I remember when I was a little girl, I couldn’t wait to grow up. Time passed so slowly. Then suddenly, I was out of high school, thinking about my future. Then I was married and had a family of my own. Soon my children were grown. Where did the time go? The world didn’t stand still and so much had changed, amazing. Many of my dreams had come true but there were disappointments as well. I weathered the good and the bad and got through it all.
Now that I’m in my golden years, time is racing faster than ever. In the blink of an eye, here’s a new year. I’d hardly learned to write last year’s date, when suddenly another year had gone by. The sand in the hour glass was spilling down with such alacrity it was mind boggling. Where have the hours, the days, the weeks, the months, and the years gone? It’s almost as though some time thieves have come and stolen them away.
The only choice we have is to treasure the time we have left and learn to use the ticking clock wisely. Read a book, enjoy a performance, treat your body well with proper eating and exercise, these are good ways to utilize your time. Once a minute is gone it can never be recaptured. Now could be the right moment to reach out to someone you’ve been meaning to get in touch with and let them know you’re thinking about them. Perhaps you can help a neighbor, you might clean out your clothes closet and donate the articles you haven’t worn in the longest time. Some needy person could surely find use for them.
Since you started to read this article, many minutes have passed, never to be recaptured. Time is irreplaceable, the richest man in the world can’t get yesterday back and neither can you, so don’t waste it.
It’s a new year, perhaps you’ve made some resolutions, and you plan to keep them, well good. How about that diet you were going to start, has your library card gotten dust on it, what have you put off? Decide what that is and straighten up and make the next minutes count. Hurry up, get moving, time waits for no one. Judith Levy is the New York Times best-selling author of GRANDMOTHER REMEMBERS, which has sold four million copies to date.
